29th AU Summit kicks off in Addis Ababa


The 29th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) kicked off today in Addis Ababa, under the theme, “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investment in the Youth.”

The two-day Summit was officially opened by Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) Moussa Faki Mahamat.

In his opening remark, the Chairperson called for unity for the revival of Africa. “Whenever we keep our unit in one voice, we have won brilliant victories.”

“I hope that 2018 will be a year of rising for the African Union, its financial autonomy and revival,” he added.

In his speech, the Chairperson further indicated priority areas at the continental level.

“The African Union (AU) has decided to give priority to prevention with regional mechanisms to deal with conflicts in the continent”.

He said the situations in South Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Central African Republic, DRC, Burundi, Guinea Bissau, Gabon and the border dispute between Djibouti Eritrea are current concern.

President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, handed over a cheque of 1 million US dollars raised from the sale of 300 cattle to the African Union Foundation.

The Summit is also expected to focus on trade, AU reforms and youth empowerment, among others. [FBC]
